Chinese laptop maker Zhanjiang Xinjuneng Technology has launched the world’s first laptop with a 64-core CPU through the use of AMD EPYC processors (via PCOnline). This isn’t the first time EPYC has worked on a mobile computer, but it’s the first time a server CPU has found its way into an actual laptop. EPYC CPUs usually generate a lot of heat, but Zhanjiang Xinjuneng claims that his Yunguai REV-9 laptop from the company makes good use of liquid cooling.
The 17-inch REV-9 offers 64-core EPYC chips (7713 and 9554). The former is the Zen 3 Milan model and the latter is the Zen 4 Genoa model, meaning you don’t have to compromise on generation. However, these options offered by the REV-9 mean that the REV-9 has two different motherboards, as the Milan and Genoa chips use separate sockets.
Of course, the performance of these CPUs will depend on the REV-9’s cooling capabilities, especially since high-end EPYC CPUs tend to run quite hot. This laptop uses liquid cooling, and although Zhanjiang Xinjuneng didn’t see it, he did get a Cinebench R23 result of 49,000 on the EPYC 7713, which he claims works pretty well. And it seems. This is about the best performance we know of. Obviously, the more notable ones are at least good enough for a 225 watt chip. The TDP of the 9554 is 360 watts, so it could be a thermal throttle.
The laptop’s GPU of choice is Nvidia’s RTX 4080, which Zhanjiang Xinjuneng says is “desktop-level,” but it’s unclear if this means it’s a desktop graphics card. The claimed dimensions are 420mm x 325mm x 46mm, and it could be equipped with a dual-slot GPU, and the press release mentions desktop-like expansion card upgrades. However, there is no dual-slot RTX 4080, although Zhanjiang Xinjuneng may be manufacturing it independently.
Zhanjiang Xinjuneng also says that the REV-9 can be upgraded to an RTX 4080 Super, which is interesting since it hasn’t been released yet and Nvidia hasn’t acknowledged its existence. The company claims that it will be 15% faster than the RTX 4090 mobile, which seems correct since the laptop 4090 is similar to the 4080.
The Yunguai REV-9 is scheduled to be released on December 19th and will be sold exclusively on Chinese retailer Taobao.
