DAVISON TOWNSHIP, MI – New technology that can capture license plate data could be coming to Davison Township.
Davison Township Police Chief Jay Rendon said at the Nov. 13 meeting that the camera system will help police search for wanted vehicles.
Flock Safety camera systems are solar-powered cameras that are typically mounted on poles along the road. They record the license plate data of each car they pass.
The camera system is already in use in the nearby cities of Flint, Burton and Flushing, and could help the Davison Township Police Department more quickly identify vehicles and missing people.
Rendon added that the camera did not capture any faces or people.
The camera system will also not be used for traffic enforcement because the state has ruled it unconstitutional.
The photos will gather objective evidence and facts about the vehicle, Rendon said. For example, if police were looking for a red Dodge Charger with a broken rear window, the system could identify it if it was photographed.
Lendon said the cameras do not do facial recognition, so police still have to run license plates through a separate system.
Rendon said the data collected will not be stored for more than 30 days unless something needs to be downloaded for court purposes.
“It’s my job to make sure we do the best job of protecting the public and keeping them safe. This technology is out there and I think it would be remiss not to look at it,” Rendon said. said.
Rendon said using the system to speed up the process of finding missing people could be a matter of life and death.
“Time is valuable, and when you wear a Flock camera, you eliminate all the red tape,” Rendon said.
According to the International Association of Chiefs of Police, 70% of crimes involve the use of a vehicle.
Pricing for the cameras has not yet been determined, but if approved by the board, Flock representatives will conduct road surveys to determine needs.
No action regarding the cameras was taken at the November or December board meetings. Davison Township’s next meeting will be held at the Township Municipal Center on January 8th at 6:00 p.m.
