Adoptable Pet of the Week in Billings

Wet Nose Wednesday This week’s pet is Oliver.

Oliver came to the shelter as a surrender, said Derek Wolfe, Humane Services Coordinator for Yellowstone Valley Animal Shetler. This adorable big dog has been here for a few weeks and seems like the perfect big dog companion.

He has a large personality that matches his physique.

Oliver, a 4-year-old mastiff mix, weighs over 80 pounds and looks healthy, if not a little on the skinny slide. He is a handsome dog with expressive dark eyes and a charming mastiff face, and a personality to match. He drools surprisingly little (a common trait among Mastiffs).

According to the American Kennel Club, mastiffs are generally loving dogs that are great for families and have a medium energy and trainability level. Oliver knows some basic commands, such as “sit.” This breed usually does not bark excessively. The AKC writes:

Mastiffs are patient, loving companions and guardians who value gentle training best. Eternally loyal, Mastiffs are protective of their families and are naturally wary of strangers, so early training and socialization is essential. Mastiffs are great pets, but acquiring a powerful giant dog shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Mr. Wolf said that despite his strength and power, Oliver performs fairly well on a leash. Dogs benefit most from regular exercise and playtime with their owners.
