BELFIELD — The Belfield Bantams are defying expectations and building a new legacy after splitting their co-op with Heart River for basketball season. The team currently has an impressive record of 4 wins and 2 losses after two games over the weekend, and will be heading into the Christmas break with the wind in the air.
On Dec. 15 against New England, Belfield was able to take a 33-23 lead at the half and never had to look back. Messa Kuehl’s timely 3-pointer helped the Tigers score in double digits, increasing their total to 12 points, but the Bantams benefited from first-half scores from Sidney and Sage Froehlich, each with 13 points. He scored 7 points.
Bantam senior center Jamie Bachman paced the team with six points in the first half, but Sydney Froehlich stood out with nine points before intermission.
The Tigers dominated the court in the second half with Sophie Olsonavsky scoring 14 points in the second half en route to a game-high 20 points, outscoring Belfield 24-22. However, NEHS was unable to chip away at the Bantams’ remaining lead at halftime.
Late in the game, Sidney Frohlich added four in the final 16 minutes, Bachman added five more for a double-digit total of 11, and Abby Talkington made a solid four of her 11. decided. The Bantams were solid at the free throw line, going 15-of-10 in the second half on six shots and 15-of-21 overall.
New Salem Almont 45, Bantams 36
The following game at New Salem-Almont on December 16th, Talkington scored 10 of his team-high 12 points in the second game, but the Bantams’ fortunes did not fare much better with a 45-36 road loss. There wasn’t. Half a comeback attempt. Sage Froehlich scored eight points in the game, and Sidney Froehlich and Hadley Talkington each scored six points, but it wasn’t enough to defeat the Holsteins, who ultimately won 4-2.
Belfield’s next game is a home date against Trenton on Dec. 30, followed by a trip to Richardton-Taylor on Jan. 4. The Bantams defeated the Raiders 39-33 in their last meeting on Dec. 12 in Belfield. New England (2-3)’s next games are Dec. 19 against Lemon, South Dakota, and then Grant County/Mott Regent on Dec. 21 before the Christmas break.
