San Diego police on Monday released a video showing the events leading up to the fatal shooting by a man who allegedly opened fire on officers at a 4S Ranch strip mall earlier this month, critically injuring an SDPD sergeant.

The events that led to the fatal shootout took place on Dec. 7 at around 10 p.m., when Harris, a San Diego resident, was a suspect in vehicle theft and auto theft, as well as the subject of an unenforced restraining order. It started when police received a report that there was a police officer. It was a domestic violence incident, said SDPD Lt.
Approximately 90 minutes later, officers located the stolen vehicle parked at 4S Commons Town Center.
“Officers made plans to serve the (court order) on the suspect,” said Lt. Joseph Jarjula of the county sheriff’s department. “The suspect was inside the Ralphs store. Several officers attempted to make contact with him, but he ran from the store. Other officers were outside the store and in the parking lot.”
The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the use of deadly force by SDPD officers.
The volley fatally wounded Harris and left the SDPD Sgt. Anthony Elliott, shot in the head. Elliott was hospitalized in serious but stable condition.
In the SDPD video, viewers hear part of the 9-1-1 call. In it, the woman tells her dispatcher that her car was stolen and she knows where it is, but that her suspect has her gun.
According to documents in the video, officers approached the stolen vehicle and found an unidentified woman asleep in the passenger seat. Officers believed Harris was inside the store and had the photo.
The video stops at Harris “pointing his gun and firing at the officers,” according to the caption. A person identified as “Officer 1” then fired several shots at Harris, causing him to fall to the ground. At one point, an officer said “shots were fired.”
Then one officer says, “Hey, stand back, stand back, stand back, stand back — he still has the gun in his hand.” Another officer yells at Harris to drop the gun from his hand, and two other officers stand nearby with their weapons drawn.
SDPD said the video paused just as Harris fired a shot at the sergeant, hitting him in the head.
The video includes a written statement from an SDPD sergeant who said he ran to the front of the store before Harris left. Harris then “jumped over the shopping cart enclosure wall, turned and fired at the sergeant at close range.”
According to the video statement, after Officer 1 fired his gun, he “immediately realized that the sergeant was no longer with his fellow officers,” and “fell into the cart enclosure with a gunshot wound to the head. “I found the police sergeant there.” . Officers removed Harris’ gun, handcuffed him, and provided medical assistance.
Paramedics took Harris to a trauma center, where he was pronounced dead around 1 a.m. Dec. 8, according to the county sheriff’s department.
The video shows a photo of the weapon Harris allegedly used, a second loaded magazine, and a photo of the police car that was hit by the bullet fired from the gun.
Authorities on Friday identified the three SDPD officers who shot and killed the suspect, according to the county sheriff’s department. Officer Tanarat Crow, Officer Darrion Talalel and Officer Trevor Wright fired their shots at Harris, police said.
Elliott, a husband and father of two young sons, remains hospitalized and receiving “life-saving treatment,” according to the San Diego Police Officers Association.
