Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out, Black Panther) will be sitting in the big chair to make his directorial debut with Netflix’s TH Kitchen, Blavity reports. In fact, he shared directorial duties with Kibwe Tavares (Jonah) and co-wrote the screenplay with Joe Murtagh (Gangs of London).
The synopsis reads as follows, so be careful not to get caught in a loop by looking at the title. All forms of public housing have been removed and The Kitchen is all that remains. A community that refuses to leave the place they call home. Here we meet Iji, a loner who lives here out of necessity and is desperately trying to find a way out, and Benji, a 12-year-old who has lost her mother and is looking for her family. We follow an unlikely pair as they struggle to build a relationship within a hostile system. ”
The Kitchen stars Top Boy former members Kane Robinson, Jedediah Bannerman, Ian Wright, Hope Ikpoku Jr., Christelle, Backroad G, Teija Kabs, and Demi Ladipo.
As exclusively reported by Shadow and Act, the Get Out star said: No matter how dark and inhuman the class system becomes, in this film the light of our unity, community, and humanity shines through. ”
Co-director Tavares added: “I’m so excited for audiences to see The Kitchen. Having grown up in London, this film is truly a love letter to the city. I’m thrilled to have had Netflix’s support in making The Kitchen. It made a lot of sense. It was a very long journey from script to film, but I wanted to make something really fresh, thoughtful and cinematic, and I’m very proud of the finished film.”
The film will be released on Netflix on January 19th and features music by Labrinth and Alex Baranowski.
