In a year full of great games, some great releases often go under the radar. For many, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk seems to have done just that. As a modern love letter to jet set radio, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk does everything I wanted and more. The gameplay and trick system are flawless, and everything explodes with a sense of style we haven’t seen since Jet Set Radio Future. Not only is it incredibly fun and addictive, he gets major bonus points for having one of the best soundtracks of any game released in 2023.
When it was announced that Arzest, one of Balan Wonderworld’s developers, was working on a sequel to Sonic Mania, it raised all sorts of red flags. However, as a regular Sonic fan, I knew I would buy it anyway. And Sonic is happy to report that he was pleasantly surprised by how much he enjoyed his time with the superstar. The physics are great and the emerald powers are really fun. And Trip is a welcome addition to Sonic’s ever-growing roster of characters. It’s debatable for many, but I actually enjoyed the Superstar soundtrack a lot. My only complaint is with the game’s boss fights, but other than that I loved my time with Sonic Superstars and can’t wait to see what happens next.
In many ways, Street Fighter 6 felt like it snuck up on me. Although I closely watched character reveals and played the game’s beta, part of me was still skeptical about the new direction the series was going. When I finally got my hands on the game in June, all my fears were put to rest. The gameplay is fast, fun, and strategic, making it this year’s go-to multiplayer game with friends and family (even those who don’t play traditional fighting games). Post-launch support has been a slow drip feed of content, but the core game is so strong that you don’t need to worry about it too much. I hope Street Fighter 6 continues to be treated well in 2024.
Another game I really got into, Marvel’s Spider Man 2, wasn’t as exciting as most people. I loved the original Spider-Man, but Miles Morales felt too samey to me. So while I knew Spider-Man 2 would be well-crafted and fun, I was worried that it wouldn’t have the same immersive “newness” as the original. Thankfully, my fears were unfounded. The stakes are higher, the combat is more polished, and thanks to the addition of webwings, the movement in New York is somehow even better than before. Honestly, there’s not much to complain about here. Insomniac Games has created a truly great sequel to his one of the best games of all time.
When I looked back at all the games released this year, there was no doubt in my mind what would be number one on this list. The original Resident Evil 4 is not only one of my favorite games, but one of the most influential games of all time. For that reason, I think many people were worried about whether or not it would be remade. How can you mess up perfection? Well, the Resident Evil 4 remake was so incredible from start to finish that Capcom was struck by lightning twice. All the best moments from the original are here and illustrated, but reimagined and modernized to fit perfectly with the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes. And that’s without even mentioning how Capcom made Separate Ways one of the best pieces of DLC released this year. Playing Resident Evil 4 Remake is an absolute joy and a perfect reminder of why Resident Evil 4 is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of all time.
