KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Many people will be asking Santa to bring them a new angry friend this Christmas.
KC Pet Project says the need for pet adoption is even greater this year.
In past years, cats have been the most in need of adoption, but this year they have been replaced by dogs.
“Right now, we’re seeing more dogs coming in than ever before,” said Tori Fugate, chief communications officer for the KC Pet Project.
According to research published by MDPI and the National Library of Medicine, the number of pets returned to shelters within the first six months of adoption in the United States ranges from 7% to 20%.
This is something similar shelters across the country are seeing as the KC Pet Project grows.
“We have over 250 dogs in our shelter right now. We probably have about 140,” Fugate said.
Between 40 and 60 new pets are brought to the shelter every day, half of which are dogs.
They plan to care for 16,000 animals this year, more than any other year in Kansas City’s history.
The study found that the biggest factor in the surge in returns and repossessions was not a lack of pet knowledge, preparation, or experience, but rather the high cost of pet ownership.
ASPCA research has found that gift-giving for pets can safely increase adoption rates during the holidays, and the organization supports this.
“This time of year, we want to tell everyone to choose a new best friend as a family,” Fugate said.
