The Nothing Phone 2 arrived in July this year, but it looks increasingly likely that Nothing will focus on the mid-range and lower end of the market for its next smartphone launch.
Android developer Dylan Roussel (via Android Authority) posted what is said to be an illustration of the Nothing Phone 2a. On the back of the device, we can see a centrally placed horizontal dual camera setup and three glyphs, which are fewer than what we’re used to seeing on the company’s flagship devices.
That camera placement matches something in the tipster Yogesh Brar It’s something we’ve shared before, pointing to a rear camera setup reminiscent of the 2019 Samsung Galaxy S10. Brar suggests there are some “interesting design choices”.
We also got some important specifications from the latest leak. The mid-range MediaTek Dimensity 7200 processor is mainly found in devices sold in China, such as the Vivo V27. Roussel also seems to think that the Nothing Phone 2a may be announced at Mobile World Congress (MWC), scheduled for the end of February next year.
Introducing Nothing Phone (2a). Model: A142. Codename: Pac-Man/Aero (Dactyl?). Nothing’s next phone will feature his Mediatek SoC for the first time. Mediatek Dimensity7200. It has 3 glyph parts and is a completely new design. Release event at MWC? pic.twitter.com/UTwk2bUjjADecember 15, 2023
cheaper option
Add all this up and it looks like something very much designed to take on the Google Pixel 8a, which is also expected at some point in 2024. Of course, most phone manufacturers now offer both flagship and mid-range options, so there’s nothing unusual here in that regard.
Rumors about the Nothing Phone 2a have been swirling since earlier this month when we heard it would come with a 6.7-inch display. As you can see in our Nothing Phone 2 review, this is the same size screen as the flagship option.
The Nothing Phone 2 is priced at $599 / £579 / AU$1,049. It’s already relatively cheap for a flagship phone, so we’d expect the Nothing Phone 2a’s price to drop significantly if it eventually sees the light of day.
On the other hand, we haven’t heard anything about Nothing Phone 3. Both of the previous Nothing Phones were released in July (although Nothing Phone 1 was announced in March). Therefore, his next Nothing Phone should be his July 2024.
