The cost of living continues to rise across the country. People are starting to feel alarming price increases, especially when purchasing everyday items. TikTok mom Sarah Biggers (@thebiggersthebetter) recently shared a shocking video highlighting how the USDA calculated the average American’s grocery budget in October of this year. The video has been viewed 757.4k times and received 11.7k comments on social media sites.
Biggers begins the video by sharing how the USDA releases average food tiered plans multiple times a year. The woman reveals that she watches them because she’s nosy and wants to know if she’s spending too much or too little on groceries. More importantly, this report was the one the government used to allocate food stamp funding. She said, “So I just want to know what’s going on.”
The woman said how alarming the numbers were. Biggers explains that she “knows my grocery budget and doesn’t need to be shocked because it’s expensive.” She thought her family’s budget would be higher than the USDA report because the USDA doesn’t try to cut too many corners when it comes to groceries. However, this turned out to be far from the truth.
She explains: “Everyone spends a lot of money on groceries, unless you literally want to eat ramen, potatoes, and rice for every meal.” Next, Biggers points to the report’s low costs of about $700 to $850 per month. It was emphasized that the plan was included. At the same time, a mid-range plan will jump to $900 to $1,200 per month. In the end, the liberal plan will cost her a whopping $1,200. In reality, many people spend up to $3,000 a month on groceries, Biggers said.
This is especially concerning given the fact that the median household income in the United States was $75,000, Biggers revealed. After paying taxes, people don’t have much left. Looking at these numbers, the woman revealed that people were spending almost 20% to 30% of their income on groceries. She said, “Budget-minded finance people will say, ‘Please don’t exceed 15%,’ but I don’t see how that is possible.”
The situation becomes even tougher when you consider that people also have to contribute about 30% of their income to rent. Biggers said people were getting raises but couldn’t keep up with the cost of living. The woman goes on to say that basic necessities should not become luxuries. She concluded by mentioning how crunching the numbers showed a non-ideal scenario.
People strongly agreed with the woman’s breakdown and shared their own insights in the comments section. @breadavies said, “Not only are they raising prices, they’re reducing the amount of food in the packages they give us. It’s ridiculous. We have to keep increasing our food budgets ”. @alyssabusse1 shared, “Our family of 4 spends at least $800 a month. Most months he spends around $1000.” @susvibes88 commented, “As a family of 5 we spend $300-400 a week. My grocery bill is more than my mortgage.”
