DETROIT (WXYZ) — When Rochelle Roper was pulled over by a Wayne County Sheriff’s deputy Friday, she wasn’t expecting to receive a $250 Kroger gift card.

“I feel ecstatic and happy because I saw something like this, but I never thought it would happen to me,” Roper said.

Roper was one of many people who were surprised when they were randomly stopped by a deputy and given a gift card.

Wayne County Sheriff Rafael Washington and his team partnered with Kroger and the organization “Leaders Advancing and Helping Communities” to distribute gift cards valued at $10,000.

This event is called “Santa on Patrol.”

Robert Smith, who received the gift card, said: “It was all shiny and I thought I had done something wrong, but it’s great because I need it.”

“That’s what we’re here for, we just want the people of Wayne County that we stopped to have a Christmas that’s a little bit better than if we hadn’t done this,” Washington said. ” he said.

Police officers were on Santa patrol when they spotted a mother and her children carrying gas cans. Her family had run out of gas, so the officers gave her a gift card and gave her a ride to her car.

Roper, on the other hand, said she felt elated after getting the gift card.

“My kids and I didn’t put up the Christmas tree because we were feeling depressed,” Roper added. “I am so grateful. I have no words for this.”
