The Collin County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday that an improvised explosive device was found at the cemetery.
Deputies were alerted to a possible pipe bomb found at the Scott Cemetery on County Road 161/Ridge Road, north of Wilmes Road in McKinney, according to a sheriff’s office Facebook post. . The sheriff’s office told NBC 5 that the caller said he found the device at a cemetery a week ago and called after realizing it was still there.
Officers arrived, located the object wrapped in black tape and secured the area.
The sheriff’s department said the Plano Police Department bomb squad was dispatched and determined that “the object was, in fact, an improvised explosive device.”
The Plano Bomb Squad safely disposed of the device.
“We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Plano, Texas Police Bomb Squad for their quick and effective response,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
When NBC 5 staff arrived, investigators were searching under a tree along the fence on the west side of the cemetery. Investigators, including an ATF agent, were seen handling what appeared to be nails.
NBC 5 has reached out to the sheriff’s office for more information, but the sheriff’s office said it has nothing more to share at this point in the investigation. No further information has been released about the device or who built it or left it in the cemetery.
The sheriff’s office said there is no sign of further danger to the public.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was called to assist in the investigation.
